With the longer darker nights now fast approaching, we can think about either getting our telescope(s) out and start using them, or even buying a new telescope. For those who have or who are wanting a scope that has computerised GOTO functionality, such as the highly popular and easy to use Celestron Nexstar SE series, one accessory that is a must, and is sometimes overlooked when initially buying a telescope….is a power supply.
Although some telescopes can be powered from a suitable mains adaptor, you are then restricted to being somewhere with mains power access. So what if you want a bit more “freedom”? Telescopes like the Nexstar (or SLT) series can be powered from AA batteries but these can end up being expensive in the long run and also can be affected by the cold.
Celestron offer a range of three portable, Lithium based rechargeable battery power supplies called Power Tanks: Power Tank Lithium LT, Power Tank Lithium and Power Tank Lithium Pro. Each power unit comes with a suitable charger and a velcro strap which allows the Power Tank to be mounted and secured on a tripod leg so it is off the ground and out of the way (and being a trip hazard!). The latter two battery packs also have a red light for night time use so not to “destroy” your dark adapted night vision).
Celestron have written a useful guide to powering a telescope using their range of Power Tanks here. So if you are considering one it is well worth a read.
Powertanks are available from ourselves and your favourite or local astronomy retailer.
